He joined the Royal Canadian Medical Corps and served in Canada from 1943 to 1945. Earl has been a member of Atikokan Legion Branch 145. ROSE, Donald I. WWII Donald was born on April 19, 1923 in Gladstone, Manitoba and moved with his parents to Stony Mountain in 1924. He was working for MacDonald Brothers Aircraft in Winnipeg before he enlisted in February 1942 with the Royal Canadian Air Force and served with 434 Squadron during World War II. Donald was sent to the Initial Training School in Saskatoon then began training as an Air Bomber at the No. 8 Bombing and Gunnery School in Lethbridge. He went overseas to England and was posted at Staverton for a course beginning on May 19, 1943. Flight Sergeant Rose was killed in action on January 29, 1944 when his Halifax aircraft failed to return from a night raid over Berlin. He is commemorated at the Berlin 1939-1945 War Cemetery in Brandenburg, Germany and is buried in Hamburg, Germany. Rose Bay in Molson Lake was named after him in 1988. ROSS, Floyd Reginald WWII Floyd was born on April 17, 1921 in Antler, Saskatchewan. He came to the Elgin district and worked on a farm west of Elgin for William J. Lucy. He is well remembered there as a young man who loved to play guitar and sing. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in May 1942 and married Joyce Farrough of Elgin that winter. They had one daughter, Brenda, who was born before he went overseas. Floyd served in Canada, Alaska and overseas and was part of 356 Squadron serving on a mission over Burma on June 12, 1945 when a violent tropical storm came up which drove their plane 100 miles off course and out of radio contact. He was flying a Liberator KH-316 with 356 Squadron. The plane crashed on a mountainside and all crew members were killed. Flight officer Ross was buried in a mass grave in Rangoon, Burma and was awarded the 193945 Star, the Burma Star, the Defence Medal, the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Bar and the War Medal 1939-35. His name is on the Memorial Cenotaph in Elgin, Manitoba. ROSE, Thomas Herbert “Tom” WWII Tom was born on April 6, 1921 in Gladstone, Manitoba. Very active in sports and skilled at carving and model building, he was awarded first prize at a handicraft exhibition in 1937 at the T. Eaton Co. in Winnipeg when he submitted a model of the Queen Mary. When World War II began, his ambition was to join the Royal Canadian Air Force. He was first rejected because of an eye problem but when this was rectified, he was accepted in April 1940. He graduated as an air observer on October 25, 1940 and arrived in London on November 25 when he started serving with 40 Squadron. Tom was reported missing in action on his first operational flight over Berlin on December 22, 1940. Rose Point on Molson Lake was named after him in 1988.
