185 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca POWELL, Howie Jeffreys WWI Howie was born on February 19, 1888 in Souris, Manitoba and he excelled in sports and was an excellent horseman. By 1910, he was homesteading at Lancer, Saskatchewan and then Howie enlisted in the 1st Canadian Mounted Rifles in December 1914 in Brandon, Manitoba. He trained in Canada and served in England, France and Belgium. Howie sailed for England in June 1915 and arrived in France a few months later, in September. He was killed in action on May 13, 1916 in the trenches at Hogge, near Ypres. Howie is buried in the Menin Road South Military Cemetery in Belgium. PURKESS, William J. T. WWII William was born in Pratt, Manitoba in 1920. He joined the Royal Canadian Ordnance Corps and served in Canada during World War II. William was a member of Victoria Legion Branch 121 for forty-seven years before he passed away in 2006. RAY, Marcus K. WWII Marcus was born in 1921 in Belleview, Manitoba. Except for the years he spent at war, his home was always there. He joined the Army and served as a driver with the 2nd Division, at 4th Brigade headquarters in Canada, England, France, Belgium, The Netherlands and Germany. He was awarded the 1939-1945 Star, the France and Germany Star, the Defence Medal, the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and the War Medal 1939-45. Marcus met his wife Adrianna in The Netherlands and they married there in January 1946. He had to return to Canada soon after the marriage and Adri came by ship and train in the summer. They worked hard together, mix-farming and raising four children. He thoroughly enjoyed his retirement years and was very active golfing, lawn bowling, playing cards and games. Marcus was a Life Member of Pipestone Legion Branch 230 (now closed) before he passed away in 2005. RAMSEY, John Frederick WWII John was born in 1925 in Lauder, Manitoba. He enlisted in the Army in 1944 and served during World War II. John passed away in 1995.
