179 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca OTTO, Frederick William “Fred” WWII Fred was born in 1919 in Gladstone, Manitoba. He joined the Army during WWII and served as an ambulance driver and mechanic in England, Sicily, Italy, France, Belgium and Holland. After the war, Fred returned to Gladstone for a short period of recuperation after which he moved to Winnipeg where he drove a taxi and worked at the CNR. He married Helen Spence in 1948 and they had three children. Around 1966, Fred took a job as a guard at Stony Mountain Penitentiary and a year later, moved to a new facility in Drumheller, Alberta where he worked until his retirement. He then became active in the operation of the Drumheller’s Driving Range and worked with the Lions Club in a volunteer capacity to develop housing for seniors. He died of cancer in 1982 at the age of 62. PALSSON, Thorstein “Steinie” WWII Steinie was born on August 20, 1920 at Stone Lake, east of Lundar, Manitoba. In May 1942, he enlisted in the Army with the Cameron Highlanders, “C” Company, 13th Platoon at Fort Osborne Barracks in Winnipeg and a month later, took his advanced training at Vernon, British Columbia before being shipped off to England in October. In June 1944, Steinie was called to go to France where he was wounded twice and was returned to a hospital in Watford, England to recover from his injuries. He and the Highlanders returned to Canada in July 1945. Steinie was awarded the 1939-45 Star, the France and Germany Star, the Defence Medal, the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and the 1939-45 George VI Medal. He has been a member of Lundar Legion Branch 185 for more than twenty-five years. PARNELL (CASSELMEN), Olive WWII Olive was born in 1917 in Lauder, Manitoba. She joined the Canadian Women’s Army Corps and served as a Private in England during World War II. She passed away in 2009. PALUCK, Nestor V. WWII Nestor was born in January 1923 in St. Phillips near Kamsack, Saskatchewan. He enlisted at the RCAF Recruiting Office in November 1942 and reported for military service in July 1943. Nestor took his basic and advanced training in Nova Scotia, was placed in the Royal Canadian Artillery serving on anti-aircraft guns in Halifax, then placed in infantry and sent on the Mauritania to England for battle training then on to Northwest Europe. Nestor served with the Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry in London then with the Lake Superior Regiment. After the war, he served at the Canadian Wives Bureau in London and was discharged in Winnipeg in November 1946. He married Jennifer Rostkowski and they raised three boys. Nestor joined the Ukrainian Canadian Veterans Legion Branch 141 in 1981 and served on the Colour Party as a pallbearer and Honour Guard for fallen Comrades, operated bingo, attended dinner, dances and other events.
