In World War II, he enlisted with the 12th Manitoba Dragoons which became the 18th Armoured Car Regiment. He served in England and Normandy where he was killed in action at Falaise Gap in 1944. Dennis is buried in the Canadian War Cemetery in Bretteville-sur-Laize in France and O’Neil Lake, east of Big Sand Lake, was named after him in 1963. O’NEIL, Leslie WWII Leslie was born in 1918 in Hartney, Manitoba. He joined the 12th Manitoba Dragoons and served as a Trooper in England, France, Belgium, Holland and Germany during World War II. OTTO, Carl Richard WWII Carl was born in 1915 in Winnipeg, Manitoba. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force and served in Canada during World War II. He married Kay Winchall in Winnipeg in 1942 and they had one son. Carl spent most of the war years at the Air Force bases in Bella Bella, British Columbia and Aylmer, Ontario working in aircraft maintenance while Kay stayed in Winnipeg and worked at Eaton’s. After the war, Carl returned to Winnipeg and worked at a foundry and then at the CNR, but he always wanted to go back to British Columbia. He transferred to Boston Bar in British Columbia in 1953 but the move was very hard on his wife Kate who had been born and raised in the big city; however, she soon adjusted. Carl left the CNR, started working in a sawmill and spent the rest of his working life in the forestry industry. Carl died in 1995. OTTO, Carl August “Charlie” WWI Charlie was born in 1897 in Yankton, South Dakota in the United States. He joined the Canadian Army during World War I and served in England. After the war, Charlie returned to Winnipeg, Manitoba and worked for the Canadian National Railway. He married Mary Keller in 1926 and they had one son. Charlie died in Winnipeg in 1968.
