173 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca MOSSFORD, Sam WWI Sam joined the Army during WWI and served with the 79th Battalion, 1st CMRs, 8th Infantry Brigade, 3rd Canadian Division. He fought at the battles of Ypres, the Somme, Vimy and Passchendaele. MUDGE, Albert “Al” WWII Al was born in Thornhill, Manitoba on January 4, 1924. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force and served as a pilot during World War II; however, the war ended two days before he was slated to go overseas. Al received the Madore Trophy on January 26, 1944. He passed away in 2000. NEVILLE, Robert Thomas WWII Robert was born on October 24, 1911 at Ballantrae, Birr in Kings County, Ireland. He came to Canada in 1930 and worked on the farm for Harper Elliott, and later for William J. Moffat of Elgin, Manitoba. Robert went to Sudbury, Ontario in 1940 where he was an employee of Frood for two years before enlisting in the Royal Canadian Air Force. He married Phyllis Mann in 1943 in Fort William on his way overseas. Pilot Officer Neville, serving with 419 Squadron, was commissioned Pilot Officer from October 22, 1944 and was killed in action on his 33rd birthday, on October 24, 1944. He is buried in Essen, Germany. NEETS, Daniel D. WWII Daniel was born in 1924 in Morris, Manitoba. He enlisted on December 19, 1942 in the Royal Canadian Air Force and volunteered to go overseas but he served only in Canada during World War II. He was discharged in Boundary Bay, British Columbia in September 1945 and was retained on Royal Canadian Air Force Reserve status. He was a patient in the Shaughnessy Military Hospital due to inoculants that were not sufficiently purified. Daniel has been a member of Brandon Legion Branch 3 for more than sixty-six years.
