He joined the Army and served with the 1st Division in Canada, England, Central Mediterranean and Europe. James was a member of Fort William Legion Branch 6 for fifty-six years before he passed away in 2011. MOORE, Douglas Haig WWII Douglas was born on the farm southeast of Elgin, Manitoba on March 22, 1917. In 1927, the family moved to Birch River where Doug continued his education. On September 15, 1939, he enlisted with the Royal Winnipeg Grenadiers and on June 9, 1940, he embarked for Kingston, Jamaica. He returned to Canada on September 9, 1941 and was granted 14 days furlough. Douglas then embarked on October 27, 1941 in Vancouver and arrived in Hong Kong on November 16, 1941. He was reported Prisoner of War on December 25, 1941 with “C” Force. The Canadian contingent had 1,800 men and its survivors were treated as slave labourers. Private Moore died on September 18, 1942, one of more than 300 who died in captivity. He is buried in Saiwan Bay Cemetery in Hong Kong. MOORE, Richard WWII Richard was born in Elgin, Manitoba in 1908. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force and trained as an Air Gunner in Edmonton, Toronto and at the holding unit in Bournemouth. He served in Canada, Europe and in the Pacific theatre. MOORE, Gilbert WWI Gilbert was born on March 16, 1894. He joined the Manitoba Regiment, 78th Battalion, and served as a Private during WWI. Killed in action on March 24, 1918, Gilbert is buried in the Aix-Noulette Communal Cemetery in Extension Pas de Calais, France.
