He joined the Army and served as a Lance Corporal with the Provost Corps in Canada, England, Belgium and Holland during World War II. Clifford came home after the war and got a degree in pharmacy at the University of Manitoba. He had a drugstore in Gladstone for some years and he worked with his brother Ronald who was a doctor. Clifford loved music and played many instruments. He died in October 1982 and had been a member of Grandview Legion Branch 14 and Gladstone Legion Branch 110. McNICHOL, Ronald W. WWII Ronald was born in 1919 in Russell, Manitoba. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force during World War II and trained as an air observer. Flight Lieutenant McNichol flew to England and later to Gibraltar, Malta and Egypt. His plane was shot down and he was taken prisoner to Italy then to the Sulmona prison camp near Pescara in northern Italy. He escaped when the prisoners decided on a mass break and they walked through the mountainous country at night to avoid German patrols for about 80 miles over two months. They finally got to the Canadian lines and strode into a company headquarters where they were welcomed and fed. Ronald then went to England and took more training as a pilot. After 1945, he studied and became a doctor but contracted MS after which he became a psychiatrist and worked in Louisiana and San Antonio. Ronald passed away in 1998 and his name is inscribed on a stone in Trenton, Ontario. He was a member of Grandview Legion Branch 14 and Gladstone Legion Branch 110. MICHALOW, Joseph WWII Joseph was born in 1919 in East Selkirk, Manitoba. During World War II, he joined the Royal Canadian Engineers, 3rd Field Regiment, and served from 1941-1945 in England, France and Belgium. Joseph passed away in 2008. McROBERTS, Paul R. WWI Paul joined the Canadian Army during World War I and served in France at Amiens with the Army Service Corps and the 16th Canadian Scottish.
