He joined the Army during World War II and served in Canada with the Lord Strathcona Horse. He was awarded the Defence Medal and the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal. James was a member of Gladstone Legion Branch 110 for fifty-three years before he passed away in 2008. McLEOD, Alexander Grant WWII Grant was born in 1925 in Mather, Manitoba. He enlisted in the Navy in March 1943 and served on different ships in the North and South Atlantic, in the Mediterranean and in the Suez region. Grant was put off his ship in Cairo, Egypt because he had malaria and by the time he recovered, the ship was gone. So to keep him busy while waiting for orders to another ship, Grant was sent on a commando course. This was after losing 30 pounds in hospital. He was very glad when the next Canadian warship put into harbour. Grant was discharged in October 1945. He attended the University of Manitoba and got a degree in Agriculture. He got married, raised a family in Winnipeg and worked for the Government of Manitoba until he died in 2003. His brother Ivor served in the RCAF and his cousin Royden was killed in action in the Pacific with the RCAF. McLEOD, Royden H. WWII Royden was born on November 12, 1924 in Mather, Manitoba. He helped on the family farm before enlisting in the Royal Canadian Air Force on his 18th birthday. He trained at Brendan, Vernon and Boundary Bay, British Columbia from where he went directly overseas. Flying many different airplanes, he was posted to India where he flew with 356 Squadron of the Royal Air Force and later with the Southeast Asia Air Force, based at Christmas Island. His plane failed to return from dropping supplies to POW camps. Royden was 20 when he died on August 18, 1945 over the Indian Ocean, a week after the war was declared over. Royden McLeod Lake was named after him in 1995 and he is commemorated at the Singapore Memorial. He was posthumously awarded the Operational Wings of the RCAF in recognition of gallant services in action. Royden also received the Burma Star, the 1939-45 Star, the GRF Cross, the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and the George VI Medal. McLEOD, J. Stewart WWII Stewart was born in 1926. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force and served during World War II. Stewart was a member of Fort William Legion Branch 6 for nine years and he died in 2003.
