155 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca McKIE, Margaret WWI Margaret served as a Nursing Sister with the 9th Canadian Stationary Hospital in England and France during World War I. McKINNY, Robert “Jack” KOREA Jack was born on July 10, 1933 in Winnipegosis, Manitoba. With his mother’s consent, he joined the Canadian Army in 1951 at the age of 17 and served in Canada, Japan and Korea. As a paratrooper in 1952, his parachute failed to open and he was injured. Soon after, he was sent to Korea as a radio operator. Jack was honourably discharged in 1954 and was awarded the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal, the Peacekeeping Medal, the UN Service Medal and the Korea Medal. He worked for Canada Post for 34 years, retiring in 1988 due to ill health. The Melita Legion Branch 127 presented Jack with the Meritorious Service Medal, his 50-year pin and his Life Membership. He was also a member of Gladstone Legion Branch 55 and Gillam Legion Branch 245. Jack enjoyed bowling and playing cards at the Melita Legion and he passed away in November 2007 at the age of 74. McLEAN, John WWII John was born in 1907 in Brandon, Manitoba. He served in the Royal Canadian Army Service Corps from 1942-45 in England, Italy and Holland. He recalls the day a radio communication came through that his younger brother’s troop was only a few miles away. John’s superior allowed him a jeep to drive over to see his brother. His brother was killed shortly after, making him forever grateful for those few hours spent together. John stayed in Italy after the war to help organize and prepare the ships for the war brides’ journey to Canada. Arriving home in 1947, he returned to work on the C.P.R. at Reeder, Kirkella and Miniota where he remained working until his retirement in 1969. John passed away in 1996. McLEAN, Jack WWI Jack was born in England. He joined the Canadian Army during World War I and served with the 222nd Battalion at the battles of Vimy, Lens, Loos, Hill 70 and Passchendaele.
