She taught school before joining the Women’s Division of the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1941 and serving in Canada and Dayton, Ohio during World War II. Married to J. G. Burkhardt in December 1944, Betty and her husband made their home in Sydney, Ohio and they had two children. She resumed her teaching career for a number of years and continued to live in their home in Sydney after her husband died in 1983. McFADDEN, Aubrey Thomas WWI Aubrey was born in 1895 in Penetanguishene, Ontario. It is thought that he was going to university in Toronto when he joined the Canadian Expeditionary Force and served in France with the 4th Division of the Signal Corps. Spr. McFadden was killed in action at Passchendaele in 1917. McHARDY, Donald D. B. WWII Donald was born in Fergus, Ontario in 1916. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force and served in Canada during World War II. Donald was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion for many years before he passed away in 2008. McFAYDEN, Donald Alexander WWII Donald was born on October 20, 1923 in Devlin, Ontario. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force during World War II and served as a rear gunner on a Lancaster bomber with RAF 50 Squadron. Donald was killed in action over The Netherlands on February 22, 1945 and he is buried in the Groesbeek Canadian War Cemetery in The Netherlands.
