141 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca MAGWOOD, William David WWI & WWII William was born in 1882 in Hartney, Manitoba. He joined the Army during World War I and served in England with “A” Company, 174th Cameron Highlanders, Armour Section of the 14th Canadian Reserve Battalion. He also served with the Home Guard of the Queen’s Own Highlanders in World War II. William passed away in 1968. MALCOLM, Robert Lorne WWII Robert was born in 1926 in Scotch Bay, Manitoba. He joined the Canadian Navy in Winnipeg and was sent to Saskatoon for training. He then went to Halifax, Nova Scotia where he worked on the Chippawa until the end of the war. Robert was a member of Eriksdale Legion Branch 140 for ten years and he passed away in 2008. MANSON, Hugh WWII Hugh was born in 1927. He joined the Canadian Army in World War II and served in Canada in the Infantry. Hugh has been a member of Fort William Legion Branch 6 for fifty-one years. MANN, George Westlake “Wes” WWII Wes was born in Elgin, Manitoba on November 8, 1915. He started school in 1922 and showed his musical talent at an early age, later playing the violin in the string orchestra. He graduated from Grade 12 in 1934 and received his BA degree in Theology from Brandon College in 1939. Wes held a Baptist Pastorate in Boissevain and Medora before enlisting in the Army in May 1943. He trained at Shiloh, Manitoba, and went overseas to serve with the Queen’s Own Cameron Highlanders. Lance Corporal Mann served in Canada, Britain, Northwest Europe and France where he was killed in action on August 29, 1944. He is buried in the Bretteville-sur-Laize Canadian Military Cemetery near Rouen. Mann Lake is named in honour of Wes Mann.
