139 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca MacWILLIAM, Walter A. WWII Walter was born in 1920 in Portage la Prairie, Manitoba. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force during World War II and served in England and over Europe. He attended Gunnery School in Mont-Joli, Quebec and eventually became the rear gunner with a crew in England in 1944. After flying 17 successful operational missions from 90 Squadron at Tuddenham, the crew was now flying Lancasters so they transferred to the Pathfinder Force and were posted to 7 Squadron at Oakington. On October 6 during their 23rd mission, their plane was hit near Essen, Germany. Word came that Walter was “missing in action” and much later, he was “presumed dead”. The pilot of the plane met with his parents after the war and reported that Walter was seen to bail out and while the other crew members were taken as POWs, Walter was shot and killed by the Germans. He is buried at the War Cemetery in the Reichswald Forest. MAGUIRE, Raymand S. WWII Raymand was born in Elgin, Manitoba. He enlisted in the 5th Canadian Armoured Division and served as a radio operator on Sherman tanks in Canada and in Normandy on D-Day in 1944. After suffering injuries to his left leg as well as a perforated eardrum, Raymand spent time at the Aldershot Hospital in England. MAGWOOD, Mildred WWII Mildred was born in 1921 in Hartney, Manitoba. She enlisted in the Canadian Women’s Army Corps and served in Canada. Mildred was medically discharged due to contracting scarlet fever during training in Kitchener. MAGWOOD, Eva WWII Eva was born in 1917 in Winnipeg, Manitoba. She enlisted in the Canadian Women’s Army Corps during World War II then transferred to Transport at the Officers Training Centre, serving in Canada. Eva was medically discharged in 1944 due to arthritis.
