131 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca LEWIS, Stanley Edward WWI Stanley was the son of Cornelius and Ellen Lewis of Souris, Manitoba. He joined the Army during World War I and served with the 10th Battalion as a Lieutenant. Stanley was killed in action in France on May 24, 1915 and he is commemorated at the Vimy Ridge Memorial. LITEROVICH, Stanley WWII Stanley was born in the Ukraine in 1924 and immigrated to Canada in 1926. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Naval Volunteer Reserve and served in Canada during World War II. Stanley was a member of Kenora Legion Branch 12 for five years prior to his death in 2007. LOCKHART, Vernon Nelson WWII Vernon was born in Arrow River on December 15, 1924. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Artillery at age 17, trained in Prince Edward Island and Nova Scotia and went overseas in July 1944 and to France a month later. Serving with the Royal Black Watch Highlanders, he was taken prisoner on September 13, 1944. He always said that 13 was his lucky number because things could have gone very differently that day. Vernon was taken to Dunkirk Jail and was listed as “missing in action” for seven months. He was released in a prisoner exchange, came home in May and was discharged in July 1945. He received the 1939-1945 Star, the France and Germany Star, the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and the War Medal 1939-45. Back in Arrow River, Vernon bought grain and farmed for the rest of his life. He married Ivy Richardson in 1948 and they had three children. Vernon was a member of Arrow River Miniota Legion Branch for forty-four years before he passed away in 1990. LLOYD, James Irwin WWII James was born on April 8, 1917 in Belleville, Ontario. He joined the Royal Canadian Army and served with the Lake Superior Regiment (Motor). He became a Corporal in July 1942 and a Sergeant in June 1943. James was killed in action on August 14, 1944 and he is buried in the Bretteville-sur-Mer Canadian War Cemetery in Calvados, France. James was awarded the Defence Medal and the 1939-45 Star. He was survived by his wife Verna of Port Arthur, Ontario.
