125 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca LALOR, Fintan H. “Fin” WWII Fin was born in Welwyn, Saskatchewan on November 16, 1921. He had been working in the office of the Manitoba Paper Company in Pine Falls when he left that position to enlist into the Royal Canadian Air Force in Winnipeg. Fin was posted to Rivers, Manitoba where he trained at #34 Operational Training Unit, graduating as a navigator in the winter of 1942 then receiving his commission. Fin died on March 13, 1943 at the age of 21 when he and his crew went missing over the Bay of Fundy. Pilot Officer Lalor is commemorated at the Ottawa Memorial and Lalor Lake, which is northwest of Wekusko Lake, was named after him in 1973. LANDERKIN, Clifford William WWI Clifford was born in the Rural Municipality of Louise in 1898. At age 20, he graduated from Normal School and was accepted at four schools for teaching positions, but instead enlisted as a Private II “Cadet for Pilot” on May 11, 1918. He trained as a pilot for seven months and was “discharged in consequence of being surplus to R.A.F. requirements.” Clifford then became involved in a lifetime of business enterprises, community work and family commitments. He passed away in 1969. LANDRY, Alfred E. WWII Alfred was born in 1920 in Morris, Manitoba. In 1941, he enlisted in the Army at Portage la Prairie and was a member of the Canadian Infantry Corps and the Hull Regiment, serving most of the war on the west coast including service with the American Forces in the occupation of the Aleutian Islands. While at Debert, Nova Scotia, en route to Europe, he was deemed to be in ill health and returned to the west where he received his honourable discharge in 1946. Alfred currently resides in the Morris area and has been a member of Morris Legion Branch 111 for thirty-five years. LANDRETH, Cameron WWI Cameron was born in 1892 in the Lauder area. He joined the Army during World War I and served with the 54th Kootenay Battalion in Northern France. Cameron was killed in action at Vimy Ridge in 1917.
