115 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca JOHNSTON, Charlie WWII Charlie, of Great Falls, Manitoba, joined the Royal Canadian Engineers and served as a Sapper in Canada, England and Europe where he died on October 21, 1944. He is commemorated at the Schoonselhof Cemetery in Antwerp, Belgium. Johnson Creek, which flows south into Semmens Lake, was named after him in 1995. KASHUBA, Peter WWII Peter was born in 1925. He joined the Royal Canadian Army and served during World War II. Peter was a member of Fort William Legion Branch 6 for six years and he passed away in 2002. KEARNEY, George A. WWII & PEACETIME George was born in Port Arthur, Ontario in 1923. He enlisted as Ordinary Seaman in July 1943 at HMCS Griffon and trained as a coder, serving aboard HMCS Leaside and Stone Town of C8 Mid-Ocean Escort Group in the North Atlantic, on the high seas and in the United Kingdom. Following his discharge in 1946, he continued his education at the University of Manitoba. George re-enlisted and was commissioned a Sub/Lieutenant in the Naval Reserve after which he served aboard 20 naval ships and establishments, including HMCS Ontario, Prestonian, Sault Ste. Marie, Port St. Jean, Cedarwood and several Fairmiles. He retired from the Reserve in 1963 as Lt/Commander. In his civilian life, he was employed as a high school teacher and History Department Head and he retired after 32 years in the field in 1986. A Legion Life Member and recipient of the M.S.M., George is currently President of Fort William Legion Branch 6. He has been a member of the Legion for fifty-six years. KEARNEY, Frank W. WWII Frank was born in 1924 in Port Arthur, Ontario. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force during WWII and served in Canada. Frank has been a member of Slovak Legion Branch 129.
