Joan has been a member of Fort William Legion Branch 6 for nineteen years. JANICK, Harry G. WWII Harry was born in the Rural Municipality of Stanley, Manitoba in 1920. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force and served as an Aircraftman 2 “S” in Canada and Newfoundland during World War II. Harry passed away in 1983. JASPER, Garfield WWII Garfield was born in Hartney, Manitoba. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in November 1943 in Winnipeg then went to Manning Depot in Edmonton and Regina for initial training. Back in Winnipeg, he received word that the pilot pool in England was full. To remain in the Royal Canadian Air Force air crew, Garfield had to change courses so he opted for wireless air gunner. He trained at #2 Wireless in Calgary where he graduated then took extra navigation courses before being discharged in 1945 as the war wound down. JANZ, Eugene PEACETIME Eugene was born in 1880 in Kitchener, Ontario. He moved with his family to Souris, Manitoba in 1890 where he farmed all his life except for the two years he spent with B Squadron of the 12th Manitoba Dragoons at Camp Hughes (now Shilo) where he was promoted to Sergeant. In 1910, he was awarded The McMillan Cup for The Most Efficient Soldier and in 1911, was one of two Calvary men chosen from Manitoba to attend the Coronation of King George V in London, a rare honour indeed. Sergeant Janz passed away in 1941.
