He joined the Army and served in the United Kingdom and France with the Winnipeg Grenadiers and CAL Highlanders in WWII. Donald was a member of Fort William Legion Branch 6 for thirty years before his death in 2004. HOWARD, Frederick E. “Fred” WWII Fred was born in 1912 in Crystal City into a large farming family. With his younger brother Arthur, he enlisted in Brandon in 1939 and they trained and remained together until 1945, serving in England, North Africa, Italy, France, Holland and Belgium with the 71st Battery of the Royal Canadian Artillery. In England, Fred met Helen Bridger whom he married in 1942 and they raised a son and daughter in the English countryside. He was an active member and Standard Bearer of Great Everdon Branch of the British Legion for more than 30 years. However, his Canadian General Service pin was greatly treasured and worn daily on his lapel until his death in 2000. Fred’s three grandchildren recall their grandpa talking about his early 20th century memories, of high and low temperatures on the prairies, hardships and harvests, family values, going to school on horse or sled, and many more stories. HUNT, Francis Earlby “Frank” WWI Frank was born in 1892 in McGregor, Manitoba. He joined the Canadian Army and served with the 107th Overseas Battalion of the Canadian Expeditionary Force as well as the 16th Battalion, Canadian Infantry (Manitoba Regiment). He was killed in action in France in 1917. Frank left behind his wife, Nellie (Spiess) and daughters Edith and Lucy. HUGHSON, Edward M. WWII Edward was born in 1918 on the family farm in Pine Creek, Manitoba. He joined the Army and served with the 1st Britain, Lincoln and Welland Regiment, in Canada and Holland where he was killed in action in 1945.
