95 LIBERATION TIMELINE 1943 19 JANUARY Princess Margaret of the Netherlands is born at Ottawa. The Ward at Ottawa’s Civic Hospital is declared Dutch territory. 6 JUNE Operation Overlord. British Canadian and US land along 80 km of coastline in Normandy. 4 AUGUST Anne Frank’s family’s hiding place is discovered by the Gestapo. 21 AUGUST The Falaise Gap is closed. The German army in France is routed. Approximately 150,000 German soldiers are captured. The pursuit of the German army begins. Total German casualties (killed and wounded) in the Normandy campaign were estimated at more than 200,000, while the Allies suffered 209,000 since D-Day.
