89 LIBERATION TIMELINE 10 SEPTEMBER Canada declares war on Germany. 13 MAY Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands and the Dutch Royal Family and Cabinet flee to London. The Dutch Government in Exile is established. 1939 SEPTEMBER Germany invades Poland. Britain and France declare war on Germany. The Netherlands declare neutrality. 10 MAY Germany launches Fall Gelb (Case Yellow), the assault on France and the Low Countries (Belgium, Luxembourg, and the Netherlands). 1940 15 MAY Formal Dutch capitulation. After five days the Dutch military suffer 2220 killed and 2700 wounded. More than 2000 Dutch civilians are killed. 14 MAY German Luftwaffe bomb Rotterdam. Most of the historic city centre is destroyed, nearly 900 people are killed, and 85,000 citizens are left homeless. The Dutch army surrenders.
