329 Joe joined the Royal Canadian Navy in March 1945 at HMCS Chippewa, a RCN Reserve Division, a land-based establishment in Winnipeg. He trained to be a Stoker, today known as an engineering mechanic at HMCS Hunter, another land-based establishment at Windsor Ontario as well as at Tecumseh Technical School and at HMCS Cornwallis, Nova Scotia. Joe then served on HMS Goderich, a Bangor-class minesweeper until November 1945. In January of the following year, Joe was assigned to HMCS Uganda based at Esquimalt, British Columbia. Notably, while on Uganda Joe sailed around Cape Horn on the southern most tip of South America. He was honorably discharged on 22 June,1946 at Esquimalt.
