307 Nora Smart, a life member of the Malahat District Branch 134, was celebrated for her remarkable 50-year service milestone on April 27, 2025, at the Malahat Legion in Shawnigan Lake, BC. This honor comes as Nora prepares to mark a century of life, turning 100 this December. Born in 1925, Nora's journey with service began in 1944 when she enlisted in the Women’s Division of the Royal Canadian Air Force, following her brothers into military service. Stationed in Winnipeg and Ottawa, she played a vital role in the war effort, working in the post office to ensure the security of sensitive information by sorting and scanning mail. Both her brothers survived the war, with one suffering injuries. Nora's dedication to the Legion spans over five decades. She became a member in 1974, initially with the Esquimalt Branch before transferring to Malahat Branch 134 in 1988. Her commitment to serving others is exemplified through her longstanding weekly volunteer work in the kitchen, where she prepares and serves meals for seniors. Her generosity extends beyond her time, as she donates food and resources to the branch. Nora's impact on the community began to take shape in the 1950s through her pivotal role in establishing the Greater Victoria Association for the Mentally Disabled. She championed special needs education and fundraised for the Victor Street School in Victoria. Even at 100, Nora remains active and engaged, driving herself to Crib games at the Legion everyWednesday.
