183 T/Lt. (teacher lieutenant) John James Hodgkinson RCNR of Montreal, affectionately known as Old Hodge, served as the vessel’s first captain. By all accounts, he was quite a character, and I know that my father greatly admired him. Old Hodge nicknamed my father Hyphen, a joking reference to Dad’s double-barrelled surname. In May 1942, Morden was assigned to escort duty with Mid-Ocean Escort Force, EG (Escort Group) C-2, where she would remain until late 1943.
