169 The window, “Saint Michael the Archangel, leader of the armies of heaven” is number XVII in a biblical series in the nave of the church. The preceding window, number XVI, features Saint Christopher carrying baby Jesus across a river on the flight to Egypt. It was given by Mr. and Mrs. Stewart B. Williams in memory of their son, F/O Peter Yeates Williams, who was killed in action on 16 August 1943. The Williams family were neighbours of the Crowdys in Montreal, and Peter and Charles had grown up together. Peter’s sister, Joan, was friends with my mother and her sisters. Joan married the Australian artist Vern Tremewen and moved from Toronto to the West Coast in the late 1960s with their sons, Ian and Charles. The Tremewens remained family friends of ours through the years in Vancouver. In April 2005, the 60th anniversary of the end of the Second World War, I was invited to Belgium to attend ceremonies honouring the memory of my uncle Charles and members of his Halifax crew. The invitation was issued by the Belgian Aviation History Association (BAHA) and its Archeological Team. My hosts from BAHAwere Ludo and Geneviève Van Hout of Hoboken, who helped organize the events.
