101 LIBERATION TIMELINE 8 FEBRUARY Operation Veritable, the code name for the offensive launched by First Canadian Army during the opening phase of the Battle of the Rhineland, is launched. MARCH Anne Frank dies of Typhus at BergenBelsen concentration camp in Germany. 23 MARCH Operation Plunder, the Allied assault across the Rhine into Germany proper begins. 12-16 APRIL Canadian and British forces liberate Arnhem. 14-18 APRIL 2nd Canadian Division captures Groningen. 17 APRIL Apeldoorn is liberated by the Canadians who feed and care for the 65,000 refugees in the city. 29 APRIL – 7 MAY Operation Manna and Operation Chowhound, humanitarian food drops, are conducted by the RAF, RCAF and the US Army Airforce to relieve the famine in German-occupied Netherlands. Although more than 11,000 tons of food are dropped its not enough to feed the starving Dutch. After negotiating with the Germans, a ground-based relief operation, Operation Faust, is conducted on 2 May with more than 200 Allied trucks delivering food behind German lines. 1945
