99 LIBERATION TIMELINE 1944 28 NOVEMBER First Allied convoy sails into Antwerp. 16 DECEMBER A German V2 rocket, fired from a base in the Netherlands, hits the roof of the Cinema Rex in Antwerp. More than one thousand people were in the cinema at the time watching a matinee performance of the cowboy film The Plainsman. 567 people are killed including Canadian service personnel. The official daily “starvation” ration,of 665 calories. 1945 16 DECEMBER – 25 JANUARY German Ardennes offensive, the Battle of the Bulge. DECEMBER 1944 – FEBRUARY 1945 A famine, known in the Netherlands as the Hongerwinter (Hunger Winter), occurs in the densely populated German occupied portion of the Netherlands. An estimated 22,000 Dutch civilians die of starvation. Soup kitchen provides temporary relief to starving children.
