Military Service Recognition Book

393 Every year we receive submissions from family members of veterans with details about their service. Sometimes, little or no information of the service history is known by the family. If the veteran is deceased, their service story is lost to the family. Sometimes, through careful research and access to service files, we can determine many service details. Nothing can ever replace the firsthand accounts from those who served but if these stories are not recorded or committed to paper, there is a tendency for these accounts to lose detail and clarity, when retold, over time and generations. Canadians wishing to learn more about a family member’s military service are fortunate that, for many years now, complete Service Records for all those who served in First World War are digitized and easily accessible to anyone online on the Library and Archives Canada website. Service files for Canadian service personnel killed in the Second World War are accessible to anyone online as well, but the digitization process is not yet complete, and some files have yet to be uploaded. These files are accessed at the link below: Researching your Second World War Family Member Search: Service Files of the SecondWorldWar –War Dead, 1939-1947 https:/ www.bac-lac.gc.ca/eng/discover/military-heritage/second-world-war/second-world-wardead-1939-1947/Pages/search.aspx
