385 In the Service of Canada AIR FORCE biographies Fritzke, Gilbert Fred (Gil) Gilbert was born in Fenwood, Saskatchewan on 28 November 1934. He was eighth of eight siblings to serve Canada. At age twenty, Gil joined the RCAF in 1955 at Regina, Saskatchewan and was sent to Saint Jean, Quebec for basic training. His first posting was CFB Borden where he trained as an aircraft jet technician before a transfer to CFB Portage La Prairie where he worked primarily on the T-33 trainer. Gilbert was honourably discharged in 1958 with the rank of Leading Aircraftsman. Gilbert then moved to Regina where he worked in landscaping at the University of Regina. He retired in 1999 and remained in Regina until his death in 2004. Fritzke, Leo Edward Born in Fenwood Saskatchewan on 10 June 1924, Leo Edward Fitzke was the third of eight siblings to join Canada’s services. Leo was nineteen when he joined the RCAF at Regina Saskatchewan. After basic training, Leo went overseas to England where he served as a Postal Clerk and promoted to Leading Aircraftsman. Leo returned to Canada after the war ended and was honourably discharged at Brandon, Manitoba in 1946. Leo was awarded the Canadian Defence Medal, Canadian Voluntary Service Medal and Clasp, and the War Medal 1939-1945. Leo re-enlisted in the RCAF in 1951 as a Leading Aircraftsman. He was posted to CFB Trenton in 1951 and transferred to CFB Gimli the following year. In August 1953 he went to the 1st Fighter Wing at North Luffenham, England and served as a weapons technician until 1955. Leo returned to Canada serving at numerous stations until his honourable discharge in 1972 with the rank of Corporal. Leo’s subsequent service was recognized with the Special Service Medal, and NATO Special Service Medal. �
