373 In the Service of Canada ARMY biographies Fitzke, Ernest Wilfred Henry (Roger) Roger was born on 21 April 1920 and the first of the thirteen Fitzke children to serve Canada. He joined the Army at age twenty-one. After initial training in 1942, Ernest was posted to Halifax and eventually overseas to the UK where he served as a truck driver. He was sent to Sicily in 1943 and then to France in July 1944. He returned to Canada in August of 1945 and was discharged in November 1945. He was awarded the 1939-45 Star, the Italy Star, the France and Germany Star, the Defence Medal, the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal with Overseas Clasp, and the War Medal 1939-45. After the war, Ernest re-enlisted in October 1946 until discharged in 1947. He went on to become a boilermaker until his death in 1973. His son, Dale Fritzke, also served with the RCAF. Fitzke, Tracey Louise Tracey was the fifth of eight siblings to join the armed forces. She was born in Fenwood, Saskatchewan on 4 September 1921 and joined the Canadians Women’s Army Corps at age twentytwo. She was posted to Kitchener, Ontario for basic training and then transferred to Montreal as a store woman. Tracy’s next posting was Vancouver in 1945 with the 11th Ordinance Unit. She was awarded the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and the War Medal 1939-45 for her service. In 1946 Tracey was honourably discharged with the rank of Private and remained in the Vancouver area. Tracey married John Matiets who also served in the Canadian Army. She died in 2015. �
