249 Youth Contests – Posters & Literary Do you know a student who is artistic, has a way with words or could be the next great movie director? The Legion’s Youth Contests offer a variety of mediums to engage students through artistic expression while learning about patriotism, service and sacrifice. Any student attending school in BC and the Yukon can apply. Poster and Literary Contest Students have the opportunity to win cash prizes at the local, provincial, and national level. The contest is divided into the following categories: • Primary (poster only) – grades 1, 2 and 3 • Junior – grades 4, 5 and 6 • Intermediate – grades 7, 8 and 9 • Senior – grades 10, 11 and 12 The Poster Contest has two divisions - colour and black and white. The Literary Contest also has two divisions - essay and poem. Entries are submitted at a Branch level and winning entries proceed to the zone, then the provincial and then national level. The national winning entries in each category are displayed at the Canadian War Museum from July 1 to May 1 of the following year. The second place winners and any entries receiving an Honourable Mention are displayed in the foyer of the House of Commons during the annual Remembrance period in November. The Legion also sponsors a trip to Ottawa for the senior winners in the four contest categories (two poster (b&w and colour), one essay and one poetry) to attend the National Remembrance Day Service where they place a wreath on behalf of the youth of Canada. They also have the opportunity to meet and visit with the Governor General. Students can entry as many contests as they wish, but can only submit one entry per category. Deadline to submit entries to the local branches is November 15th. To participate, schools should contact the local Legion in their area in September for details.
