215 14 15 16 17 18 The GreatWar France on 17 February 1916 and joined his battalion “in the field” in March. His earlier misstep behind him, Musgrave proved to be an exemplary soldier and leader. He was promoted to Lance Corporal in June and Corporal the following month. After seeing action on the Somme, Musgrave was appointed Acting Sergeant in November 1916 and the Sergeant in March 1917. During those winter months the 7th Battalion along with the other 47 fighting battalions that made up the four-division strong Canadian Corps trained and prepared for its role in the upcoming Arras offensive – the capture of Vimy Ridge. The assault began at 0530 on 9 April 1917. The 7th battalion was part of the initial assault that morning. The Battalion’s Unit Diary for that morning notes: Dull in morning. Raining. Bn (battalion) in conjunction with remainder of Canadian Corps and 3rd Army on right attack and carry enemy positions to a depth of 1500 yards. First objective taken without much heavy fighting although subjected to steady rifle and MG Devastated landscape’s like this concealed the remains of countless soldiers during the Great War.
