187 71ST ANNIVERSARY OF BATTLE OF KAPYONG REMEMBERED Stirring ceremonies held in Gapyeong City and the Canadian Memorial Gardens, overlooking the April 1951 Battle Sites Canadian veteran William Chrysler, 92, was the only Kapyong Battle veteran at the ceremonies, held at the CommonwealthWar Memorial in Gapyeong City, and the Canadian War Memorial Gardens and the Australian and New Zealand memorials that overlook the battle sites. Bill Chrysler paid the air fare for himself and his Korean-born wife, Kyoung-ja, out of his own pocket after Korea’s Ministry of Patriots andVeterans Affairs cancelled a plan to fly veterans fromAustralia, Canada, New Zealand and the United Kingdom to Korea to participate in the ceremonies. A resident of Fort Erie, Ontario, he is shown being assisted up the steps of the Commonwealth Memorial in Gapyeong City where he insisted on placing the memorial wreath himself on behalf of all Kapyong veterans. Helping him are Canadian Officer Cadet Athena Pucovsky (left) and Officer Cadet Jake Trenter. who are currently in Korea as exchange students.
