179 The memorials to the Royal Winnipeg Rifles (left) and the Canadian Scottish (right) at Putot-enBessin commemorate the roles played by these battalions here on 8-9 June 1944. The RWR were dug in around Putot as part of the Canadian operational plans to stop any and all German armoured counter attacks. On 8 June, three companies of RWR were surrounded at various positions by the 12th SS in and around Putot. 256 RWR were casulaties including 150 taken prisoner. The brutally of the 12th SS resulted in the murder of at least 59 RWR’s after capture.
