151 14 15 16 17 18 The GreatWar Somme, and the fateful day at Beaumont-Hamel on the first of July, 1916. I have never had the chance to speak to anyone who knew Fred, so I am left to piece together tidbits about him that I have found. His conduct sheet shows only one offence, being ‘absent from parades’ one day, for which he was docked a days’ pay (perhaps a bit of the rebellious Wilcox spirit that I have come to recognize in myself). Private Wilcox didn’t have a wife or children, Beaumont Hamel Battle field today - 324 Newfoundlanders were killed and another 386 wounded. Photo courtesy The Rooms Museum, St John’s.
