147 14 15 16 17 18 The GreatWar member of ‘Company C’, and landed in Liverpool. A train ride later, PrivateWilcox reported for duty at Edinburgh Castle on February 16th. In May of that year, the unit was moved to Stobs Camp to meet the reinforcements of Company F, thus bringing the Newfoundland contingent up to battalion strength. At the beginning of August of 1915, companies A, B, C and D were sent south to Aldershot for a final two weeks of training, as well as an inspection by the King. While it was not noted why in his records, Private Wilcox did not travel to Aldershot, and instead was to depart for Ayr with the ‘E’ and ‘F’ companies, joining the 2nd Reserve Battalion. A month later from Ayr, he boarded the Olympic (a sister ship of the Titanic) and was off to Gallipoli. For a young man from a small town in Newfoundland, I can imagine Private Wilcox certainly felt ‘come from away’ as he arrived in Turkey on December 1, 1915.
