145 14 15 16 17 18 The GreatWar know that more than one hundred years after his death, I would have a conversation with a relative of the solider who is buried next to him, and discover that the world is indeed a smaller place than we know. Frederick Wilcox (which is incidentally my father’s name as well) was born August 5, 1889 in Brigus, Newfoundland. Before Fred went to war, he worked as a paper maker in the nearby mill town of Grand Falls. He presented himself for medical examination there on December 11th, 1914 and after traveling to St. John’s by train, he enlisted four days later, on December 15th at the age of 25.
