113 Among Rider-Rider’s most iconic images of the First World War are those taken during the Battle of Passchendaele in November 1917. Of the battlefield, he wrote: “Passchendaele was a treacherous place for a cameraman—or anyone else, for that matter.” Rider-Rider attained more than 60 photographs in those early days of November, though not without that treachery he later described. The photographer and his assistant found themselves walking between water-filled shell holes, having given up on finding duckboards in the mud. A light mist settled over the area, making it nearly impossible to find the next outpost for safety. They left just in time to avoid a German barrage. 14 15 16 17 18 The GreatWar William Rider-Rider, O-2241: Tank in badly shelled mud area, Battle of Passchendaele, November 1917, Seaforth Highlanders Regimental Archives, 2018.413.2241.
