15 A MESSAGE FROM PREMIER JOHN HORGAN As Premier of the Province of British Columbia, I extend my warmest welcome to readers of the 15th annual Military Service Recognition Book published by the Royal Canadian Legion BC Yukon Command. In honour of the 75th Anniversary of the Liberation of the Netherlands, this volume focuses on the vital contributions that our veterans made to defending fundamental rights and liberating our allies from tyranny during the Second World War. Throughout my career, I have had the deep privilege of hearing extraordinary stories from BC veterans. Their stories and the images in these pages teach us that the human spirit always wins out. Standing up for what’s right — democracy, freedom and human rights — is their legacy that we must carry forward. Today, British Columbians are enriched by the wonderful relationship that our province shares with the Netherlands, and our veterans are revered throughout the world for their role in restoring hope and justice. As we reflect on the history that brought us these unique connections, we are reminded to greet our friends and neighbours with open arms, as we continue to work for inclusivity, acceptance and peace. HONOURABLE JOHN HORGAN PREMIER OF BRITISH COLUMBIA
