13 A Message from the Lieutenant Governor As Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia, it is my honour to contribute to this year’s edition of the British Columbia/Yukon Command Military Service Recognition Book. Throughout the early months of spring, I watched with great anticipation as clusters of tulips planted at Government House began to bloom. The bright orange tulips, a gift from the Embassy of the Kingdom of Netherlands, were given in recognition of the 75th Anniversary of the Liberation of the Netherlands in the Second World War. Tulips traditionally represent the international friendship between our two countries, particularly after World War II. Thousands of orange Liberation75 tulips, in addition to the deep red Canadian Liberator tulip, bloomed in commemoration across the country. They remind us to remember those Canadians lost in the fight to liberate the Netherlands, to honour the hardships faced by the Dutch during the war, and to celebrate the friendship that bloomed as a result of our two nations coming together. On behalf of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and all British Columbians, I’d like to recognize the work of the Legion. Your leadership in supporting our veterans, the Canadian Forces and their families— not only in telling stories like that of the Dutch liberation, but with supportive programs and community services— is a wonderful way to give back to those who give, and gave, so much. Sincerely, The Honourable Janet Austin, OBC Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia

15 A MESSAGE FROM PREMIER JOHN HORGAN As Premier of the Province of British Columbia, I extend my warmest welcome to readers of the 15th annual Military Service Recognition Book published by the Royal Canadian Legion BC Yukon Command. In honour of the 75th Anniversary of the Liberation of the Netherlands, this volume focuses on the vital contributions that our veterans made to defending fundamental rights and liberating our allies from tyranny during the Second World War. Throughout my career, I have had the deep privilege of hearing extraordinary stories from BC veterans. Their stories and the images in these pages teach us that the human spirit always wins out. Standing up for what’s right — democracy, freedom and human rights — is their legacy that we must carry forward. Today, British Columbians are enriched by the wonderful relationship that our province shares with the Netherlands, and our veterans are revered throughout the world for their role in restoring hope and justice. As we reflect on the history that brought us these unique connections, we are reminded to greet our friends and neighbours with open arms, as we continue to work for inclusivity, acceptance and peace. HONOURABLE JOHN HORGAN PREMIER OF BRITISH COLUMBIA

Military Service Recognition Book 76 In Flanders fields John McCrae, May 1915 In Flanders fields the poppies blow between the crosses, row on row, that mark our place; and in the sky the larks, still bravely singing fly, scarce heard amid the guns below. We are the dead. Short days ago we lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, loved and were loved, and now we lie in Flanders fields. Take up our quarrel with the foe: to you from failing hands we throw the torch; be yours to hold it high. If ye break faith with us who die, we shall not sleep, though poppies grow in Flanders fields.
