He enlisted in the Army in February 1915 and was sent to France to join the 38 Battalion. He was killed in action on June 26, 1917 at La Coulotte, France when he was nineteen years old. His brother Ralph was returned home on compassionate grounds after Samuel and his other brother Herbert were killed. Baptie, Frederick Huffman “Fred” Fred was born in Lakefield, Ontario on August 23, 1896. Fred enlisted in the 56th Battalion of the Canadian Expeditionary Force on November 30, 1915 as a Lance Corporal. He transferred to the Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry in October 1916. On April 3, 1917, Princess Patricia and Sir Julian Byng congratulated the troops on the success of their recent raids. Fred saw action at Vimy and at Passchendaele, and in 1918, after enduring five days and four nights of constant bombing and machine gun fire, he was diagnosed as suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and discharged just as the war was ending. Fred had farmed before the war, but after his discharge he became a carpenter. He passed away in 1974. His father George also served in World War One. Baptie, George Alex George was born in Lakefield, Ontario. He joined the 50th Battalion of the Canadian Expeditionary Force in Calgary in September 1915. A month later he transferred to the 56th Battalion (which became the Calgary Highland Regiment). George went to England with the 64th Battalion (which became the Princess Louise Fusiliers) in March 1916. He was discharged in 1917. George was a Legion member and Forester. He passed away in 1953. George’s son Fred also served in World War One.
