He enlisted in the Army in March 1916 in Edmonton and was sent to France. Charles was killed in action on August 15, 1917 at Chalk Pit during the Battle for Hill 70 on the outskirts of Lens in the Nord-Pas-de-Calais region of France. He was only eighteen years old. Charles was first cousin to Herbert and Samuel Ball who were also killed in action in World War One. Another cousin, Ralph Ball, also fought in World War One and was sent home on compassionate grounds when his brothers were killed. Ball, Herbert F. Herbert was born in February 1889 in Omaha, Nebraska. He enlisted in Edmonton in January 1915 and went overseas as a member of 38 Battalion with a machine gun crew. After a shell detonated among the crew, Herbert was evacuated to No. 9 Casualty Clearing Station where he died from his wounds on November 18, 1916, at the age of 27. His brother Samuel and first cousin Charles were also killed in action in World War One. His brother Ralph was returned home on compassionate grounds after Herbert and Samuel were killed. Ball, Ralph G. Ralph was born in Hillsdale, Alberta on September 29, 1899. As soon as he was old enough to be accepted, he enlisted to join his brothers in France. Ralph was returned home on compassionate grounds in 1917 after his brothers Herbert and Samuel were killed. His cousin Charles Ball was also killed in action during World War One.
