He immigrated to Canada and worked as a mechanic until he enlisted with the 51st Battalion, Canadian Expeditionary Force, on February 18, 1915 in Edmonton, Alberta. He served as a Sergeant in England and Continental Europe. Upon arrival in England, the 51st Battalion was broken up to provide replacement troops for front line battalions.
