www.abnwtlegion.com 39 THE ROYAL CANADIAN LEGION ALBERTA-NWT COMMAND YOUTH REMEMBRANCE CONTESTS As one of our primary goals, fostering Remembrance is a part of everything The Royal Canadian Legion does. Thanks to the longstanding tradition of the Annual Literary and Poster Contests, we have been able to involve Canadian school children in helping promote not only the National Remembrance Day Service, but also the act of honouring our military heritage. The Legion encourages schools to contact their local Royal Canadian Legion Branch for details on coordinating the Literary and Poster Contests. Each year, the contests are divided into four categories: • Senior – grades 10, 11, 12 • Intermediate – grades 7, 8, 9 • Junior – grades 4, 5, 6; and • Primary – grades 1, 2 and 3 (Poster Contest only) The Poster Contest is divided into Colour and Black & White divisions. The Literary Contest is divided into Essay and Poem divisions. Students may enter as many contests as they wish but may submit only one entry for each category. Deadlines for entries in the Poster and Literary Contests are determined by the local Legion branches. Please contact your Legion Branch for details. Prizes The winning entries for the four categories (school grades) are displayed at the Canadian War Museum from July 1 to May 1 of the following year. For the poster contest, the second place winners, and any receiving an Honourable Mention, are also displayed in the foyer of the House of Commons during the annual Remembrance period in November. As well, the Legion sponsors a trip to Ottawa for the Senior winners in the four contests to attend the National Remembrance Day Service where they place a wreath on behalf of the youth of Canada. They also have an opportunity to meet and visit with the Governor General. Judging Initial judging takes place at the Branch and then the District levels. The winning entries progress to judging at the Provincial Command level. From here, the winning entries are forwarded to Dominion Command in Ottawa where they are judged and the national winners are then declared. The national winning entries, along with the names of the entrants, are published in the Winners Booklet sent to all Branches and posted on Dominion Command’s website www.legion.ca.
