THE ROYAL CANADIAN LEGION ALBERTA-NWT COMMAND www.abnwtlegion.com 337 Worton, Leonard Leonard was one of four brothers who served in the Armed Forces during World War Two. He was a Leading Aircraftman in the Royal Canadian Air Force and continued with the Reserves after his discharge. He earned a commerce degree at UBC, relocated to Edmonton, and re-enlisted in the Services as a paymaster. He was discharged in 1966. Leonard earned a Vocational Education degree from the University of Alberta and taught until he died in 1975. Worton, Sid Sid was born on December 17, 1911. He apprenticed with his father in the newspaper business but enlisted in the Armed Forces during World War Two, along with his two brothers. Sid served overseas as a Corporal with the Royal Canadian Air Force. After the war, he moved to Victoria, BC and then to Seattle, Washington. Sid returned to Canada in 1998 and died in Camrose in March 1999. Zengel, Raphael Louis “Ray” Ray was born on November 11, 1894, in Faribault, Minnesota but his widowed mother moved to Saskatchewan when he was six. In 1914, he joined the 45th Battalion and went to France where he was drafted into the North Saskatchewan Regiment with the 5th Battalion. Ray received the Military Medal for bravery at Passchendaele on November 11, 1917 and the Victoria Cross for bravery at Amiens on August 9, 1918. He also fought at Vimy Ridge. After the war, he was a firefighter in Calgary then farmed in Rocky Mountain House where he was a charter member of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 8, served as President and was made a Life Member. In 1972, the Branch changed its name to R.L. Zengel V.C. Branch in his honour and a mountain in the V.C. Range northeast of Jasper was named after him. Regimental Sergeant Major Zegel served in Suffield, AB during World War Two and he farmed until he retired to Errington, BC. Ray died on February 27, 1977. His ashes were buried in the Field of Honour in Pine Grove Cemetery, Rocky Mountain House.
