THE ROYAL CANADIAN LEGION ALBERTA-NWT COMMAND www.abnwtlegion.com 321 Wierzba, Philip Clair “Phil” Phil was born in Leduc, Alberta in 1917. He enlisted in the RCAF in 1942 and trained to be an Aero-Engine Mechanic (rigger) at Edmonton Youth Training, Brandon, Manning Pool, and at the Technical School at St. Thomas, Ontario. In December 1942, he was posted to the Shepard Airport near Calgary where he remained for the duration of the war. He was affiliated with No. 3 Wireless Training School in Calgary, where he gained his experience keeping the vintage planes flight worthy. Phil was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Ponoka Branch 66 for over forty years. Phil died in 1997. Wigglesworth, George Albert George was born in Eau Claire, Wisconsin on October 25, 1893. His family moved to Alberta in 1905, and he enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force during World War One. By the time he had completed his pilot’s training and earned the rank of Lieutenant, the war had ended and he never saw action. His discharge papers were sent to Canada with another soldier by mistake, so George had a paid one-year vacation in England. When he returned to Caroline, Alberta he set up a pole treating plant business and three logging camps west of town. George developed diabetes which left him nearly blind for the last year of his life. He passed away in 1960. Wilby, Alex Alex was from Viking, Alberta. He served as a Private in the Army during World War One and was killed in action. Alex was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Viking Branch 81.
