He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Army Service Corps in 1941 and served in Alberta, England, North Africa, Italy and Nijmegen, Holland. Joe was on leave in England at the end of the war but returned to Holland where he drove a truck to Czechoslovakia. He also drove equipment to a port in France so it could be returned to England. Joe returned to Canada in December 1945 and was discharged in February 1946. He received the 1939-1945 Star, the Italy Star, the France and Germany Star, the Defence Medal, the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal, and the Victory Medal. He was a life member of The Royal Canadian Legion Bellevue Branch 19, having served at one time as President. Joe died in 1999. Whitlow, John “Jack” Jack was born in Chorlton-cum-Hardy, near Manchester, England on April 9, 1916. His family immigrated to Canada in 1924 and settled in Cremona, Alberta. Jack enlisted in the Royal Air Force in 1938 and served for the next three years as a wireless operator. Jack saw active service in Europe and took part in the Battle of Dunkirk from which he was rescued by a civilian British boat. He served with 3rd Wing Yatesbury, 37th Squadron Feltwell, 50th Wing, 13th Squadron, HQU Combined Forces in France, and RAF Odiham. Jack transferred to the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1944 as a wireless operator mechanic and was discharged in April 1945. He was awarded the 1939-1945 Star, Defence Medal, War Medal 1939-1945, Good Conduct Badges 1941-1944, and the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal with Clasp. Jack passed away on February 15, 1986, in Vancouver, British Columbia. Wiebe, Joel Vincent Joel was born in Edmonton in 1984. He joined the Canadian Army in the fall of 2004, did his basic training in December 2004 and completed Soldier Qualification and Basic Military Qualification in Wainwright, Alberta in July 2005. Joel was then posted to Edmonton, A Company, 3rd Battalion Prince Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry. He completed Arctic and Field Medical training and transferred to Charlie Company 3rd Battalion PPCLI and began work-up training for deployment to Afghanistan on February 20, 2007. On June 20, 2007, the day before his 23rd birthday, Joel and two other soldiers were killed by an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) in the Panjwaii District. He was posthumously awarded the Sacrifice Medal at Rideau Hall in November 2009.
