Del enlisted in the Army on April 25, 1916 by claiming he was four years older than he was. His real age was only discovered when he was in England, and because he couldn’t be sent home immediately, he was made a bugle boy. Del was discharged in Quebec City on December 10, 1916, five days before his sixteenth birthday. He came to Alberta after the war and worked as a Ranger for the Dominion Forest Service. In 1925, he homesteaded on the Tay River west of Caroline. Del enlisted again in the Army in July 1940 but because of his age and his having a family of five children, he was discharged in September 1940. Del’s health began to fail in 1960 and he made frequent trips to the Colonel Belcher Hospital in Calgary. He passed away in 1962.
