THE ROYAL CANADIAN LEGION ALBERTA-NWT COMMAND www.abnwtlegion.com 273 Stoddart, Daniel Whitfield C. D. “Dan” Dan was born in Carlton Place, Ontario in 1918. He enlisted in the RCAF and completed 31 years of service as Supervisor of Supply Accounts and Administration Branch, reaching the rank of Master Warrant Officer. He was stationed at Gander, NL; Winnipeg and Portage la Prairie, MB; Edmonton, AB; Dorval, QC; Penhold and Moose Jaw, SK. Dan was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Ponoka Branch 66 for 27 years and served as 1st Vice President, Poppy Chairman, and Chairman of the New Building Committee. He was awarded his Life Membership in 1988. Dan died in 1991. Stokes, Martin Robert Martin was born in Talbot, Alberta in 1920. He enlisted in the Calgary Tank Corps and participated in the Dieppe Raid but could not disembark because his tank engine did not start. He often said that faulty tank engine saved his life. He served in France, Belgium, and Italy. Martin was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Ponoka Branch 66 for 50 years and served on the Executive Committee. He died in 1999. Strand (Darlington), Joan Joan was born on October 20, 1919, in England. Her family moved to Canada in 1928 and lived for some years in Millet, Alberta. When Joan was seventeen, she went to train as a nurse at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Edmonton, Alberta but unfortunately became ill and was unable to complete her training. During World War Two, Joan enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force and served from 1942 to 1946 in Calgary, Alberta. She married Russell Strand, a Flight Officer in the RCAF who was killed when his plane crashed in England in 1945. Joan moved to Vancouver, BC where she eventually remarried. Joan died in 1961.
