He grew up in the Thorsby area of Alberta before enlisting in the Army as a Gunner in 1942. He took basic training in Alberta and Shilo, Manitoba before being shipped overseas. He saw action in France, Belgium, Holland, and Germany before being discharged in 1946. He was awarded the 1939-1945 Star, France and Germany Star, Canadian Volunteer Medal with Clasp, Defence Medal, Normandy Campaign Medal, and War Medal 1939-1945. Fred then returned to Thorsby where he took up farming and later took a job in construction to subsidize his farm. In 1956, Fred and his family moved to the Village of Thorsby where he worked on the oil rigs and later ran a trucking business hauling water to the drilling rigs. He retired in 1981 and moved into the Lodge in 2007. Fred passed away in March 2010. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Pioneer Branch #144 in Thorsby for 31 years. Raaflaub, Robert “Bob” Bob was born in Monitor, Alberta in 1920. He moved to Boyle, Alberta in 1936 and except for his War service, lived there until he passed away in 2001. Bob enlisted in the Army in Camrose, Alberta in 1941 and served with the 6th Canadian Infantry in France, Belgium, Holland, and Germany during World War Two. He was discharged in 1945. Raymond, Edward George Edward was born on April 13, 1887, in Norfolk, England. After coming to Canada, he worked as a farm labourer until he enlisted in the 51st Battalion, Canadian Expeditionary Force on February 13, 1915. He transferred to the 15th Battalion (48th Highlanders Regiment) and was killed in action on August 15, 1917, the first day of the Battle for Hill 70 near Lens, France. Edward is remembered on the Vimy Memorial, in Pas de Calais, France.
