He joined the Fife And Forfar Yeomanry, the local militia cavalry regiment and served for 3 years. He came to Canada in 1910 and worked on farms in the Sedgewick area of Alberta. John enlisted in the 51st Battalion, Canadian Expeditionary Force on August 7, 1915. He trained in Edmonton before transferring briefly to the 63rd Battalion and then going to England with the 194th Edmonton Highlanders in 1916. After further training, he joined the #6 Machine Gun Company on May 5, 1917, attached to the 31st (Alberta) Battalion in France. John was wounded and gassed in the Battle for Hill 70, near Lens, France on the August 18, 1917. After recovering in England, he was assigned to various Medical units until the war ended. He was promoted to Sergeant in 1919 and returned to Sedgewick. John was a charter member of Branch #55 of the Royal Canadian Legion in Sedgewick and held a number of positions including President. DuringWorldWar Two, he volunteered to inform and console families who lost loved ones in that conflict. Murray, Elias James “Jim” Jim was born on October 15, 1889, in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. He came to Alberta in 1908. Jim served in the Army for two years during World War Two. In 1938, he purchased a farm in the Shilo district of Alberta and in 1946, formed Mitten and Murray Lumber with partner Bob Mitten. In 1947, Jim moved to Caroline, Alberta where he built a home. He served on town council in Caroline for four years and as Mayor for three years. Jim passed away on March 19, 1978. Murray, Jim Jim was born in 1898. He enlisted in World War One with the Canadian Army in 1916. Jim was killed in action in 1917 at Vimy Ridge in France.
