THE ROYAL CANADIAN LEGION ALBERTA-NWT COMMAND www.abnwtlegion.com 201 Melville, Allan G. Melville was born in Nearn, Scotland in 1887. After immigrating to Canada, he homesteaded near Donnelly, northern Alberta. In 1914, he went to Ottawa when World War One started and enlisted in the Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry. He was promoted to Company Sergeant Major and then Lieutenant. Melville returned to his homestead in Alberta after being discharged on March 20, 1919. Mikalonis, Olgart John “Ikey” Ikey was born in Lithuania on April 1, 1922. In 1932, he and other family members joined his father who had immigrated to Canada in 1928. He volunteered for service in 1942 and after completing Basic training, was sent to England in 1944 with the Canadian Scottish Regiment. Ikey was given special training in small arms and later communications so that he could become a trainer in those fields. He served in England, France, and Belgium, and when the war ended, he was selected to remain with the Occupation Forces in Germany, Holland, and on the North Sea Islands. He was awarded the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal. Ikey finally returned to Boyle in 1946 and worked in the post office. In 1947, he became postmaster and worked until his retirement in 1982. He was always involved in the community, and served as Boyle’s first Mayor from 1954 to 1958, as President and Secretary of the local Chamber of Commerce, and as Secretary-Treasurer of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 169 in Boyle, where he was a Life Member for 25 years. In addition, Ikey was an active member of the Roman Catholic Church, serving as principal organist for many years. Ikey passed away on February 21, 2011. Mikulin, Walter Walter was born in Boyle, Alberta on April 1, 1923. He served with the 49th Edmonton Infantry Regiment in Canada and overseas during World War Two. He took a stretcher bearer’s course. Walter was discharged on July 29, 1944 and returned to Alberta where he farmed north of Boyle. He helped build the first Legion in Boyle and served as Vice President of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 169 for several years. He remained a Legion member until he passed away on October 20, 2012.
